York∞Universe is an Astronomy & Astrophysics written and presented by the students and faculty of York University in Toronto, Canada. It broadcasts live each Monday night at 9pm EST / 6pm PST / 0200 UTC from the steps of the York University Astronomical Observatory. The team of hosts includes Paul Delaney, Lianne Manzer, Jesse Rogerson, Harrison Ruess, Ryan Marciniak, and Dr. John Moores. Scroll down to learn more about the hosts.
The York∞Universe works in concert with the York Observatory’s Online Public Viewing program (OPV). The OPV program allows you to see images from York’s two telescopes, chat with the observatory’s observing team, and ask questions of the hosts during the live show. You can log into the OPV chatroom at the observatory’s website. (NOTE: The AFM Chatroom is NOT used during York∞Universe).
*York Observatory offers public viewing events for Toronto-area residents and visitors. The sessions are free, but donations are greatly appreciated.
York∞U’s lead SkyGuide, Paul Delaney, is a member of York University’s Department of Physics and Astronomy, the Coordinator of York’s campus observatory, and Director of the university’s Division of Natural Science. He holds both a Bachelors and a Masters Degree of Science, has worked as a nuclear physicist for Atomic Energy of Canada, served as a support astronomer at Arizona’s McGraw-Hill Observatory, and was a Master of Bethune College. Paul is also passionately involved in public outreach and is the recipient of several teaching, lecturing, and outreach awards.
Lianne recently her MSc in Astrophysics, with a focus on active galactic nuclei. She is very active in public outreach and enjoys baking, competitive sports, and photography. Lianne is on Twitter at @LianneManzer.
Jesse is currently working on his Ph.D. in Astrophysics, focusing on active galactic nuclei. He is very involved in astronomy outreach and enjoys hockey and ultimate frisbee. Jesse blogs about his research and his various activites at his website. You can also follow Jesse on Twitter.
JOHN E MOORES, PhD:
Harrison is from Toronto, Canada. He works in the tourism/culture industry delivering science-based public programs, demonstrations, and talks to groups of lovely people. He is currently completing a post-graduate certificate in Corporate Communications, and loves to get people excited about science and astronomy. Sophia is a undergraduate student at York University majoring in Astrophysics. She is an active member of the York Observatory team, participating in Public Viewing, Online Public Viewing, tours, and more. She also runs the observatory’s twitter (@YorkObservatory) and facebook.
Coming from an amateur astronomy background, Ted is an experienced observer, astrophotographer, and telescope-maker. He was previously the VP of Research and Development with Solar Systems Networking, a position that he retired from to pursue his love of astronomy. Ted is currently working toward his MSc at the University of Western Ontario.
Robert holds a BSc in Physics and Astronomy and is working on his MSc in Laser Physics. He enjoys science outreach (check out his 365 Days of Astronomy podcast) scuba diving, hiking, motorcycling, and NASCAR.
