AFM’s Event^Horizon! 2011.08.27 Tavi Finds a SUPERNOVA!

Saturday, August 27th, 2011

AFM’s Tavi Greiner right smack dab in the middle of one of this year’s major astronomy discoveries – supernova PTF 11kly, spotted in the near-by Pinwheel Galaxy (M101).

It’s the closest supernova of its type since 1986, and astronomers from around the Earth – and in space – are racing to see it.  The supernova was first spotted by the Palomar Transient Factory survey, and Tavi has been credited by the IAU as providing the first confirmation.  The supernova (given the temporary name PTF 11kly) is of the type Ia, a critical “standard candle” tool used by astronomers to measure the size and expansion of the Universe.

A Sky Full of Stars

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

Produced and hosted by Rob Keown & Tavi Greiner, A Sky Full of Stars podcasts feature fun interviews and slideshows, and occasional ambient music hours, all focused on the Cosmos.

A Sky Full of Stars’ special presentations are aired as new productions become available.  You can check the AFM*Radio schedule for regularly-updated broadcast times.

In addition to podcast features, the A Sky Full of Stars website includes regular astronomy/space articles and citizen science opportunities..

Two of our favorite productions, both of which originally aired on AFM*Radio, are Jen and Andy Scheer’s virtual tour of NASA’s Launchpad 39A and our interview with Geoffrey Notkin of the Science Channel’s Meteorite Men.  Tavi also recently served as a guest panelist for Talking Space’s fun interview with Mars Rover driver, Scott Maxwell.
