British Amateur Astronomer captures Comet Siding Springs doing the splits

As quoted on the Astronomy Now website, Nick Howes, a regular contributor to the Astronomy.FM Under British Skies show, has discovered that Comet Siding Springs has split.



Nick's latest image taken on 19 March confirmed that the secondary condensation is moving with the comet and is not any background stars. The specs in the image are cosmic ray strikes.  Copyright Nick Howes, and linked from the Astronomy Now website at http://www.astronomynow.com 

Also, John Slinn at the Isle of Wight Star Party, and another Amateur Astronomer has captured images from just before the split showing an outburst.

Meteorite Men on Quest channel in the UK

If you listened to the excellent interview of Geoffrey Notkin with Rob and Tavi, you might be wondering where to catch up with the show in the UK...

Quest channel (on Freeview channel 38) is currently showing the first series.  There is an episode tonight at 21:00 GMT, and another tomorrow night at 22:00 GMT.

ESA's Mars Express heading for closest flyby of Phobos

Tonight (UK Time) the Mars Express spacecraft will skim the surface of Phobos.  On 3 March at 20:55 GMT, Mars Express will flyby Phobos at a height of 67km to gain a greater understanding of this odd-shaped moon.
