Crescent Moon
Crescent Moon: When the illuminated region of the Moon, as seen from Earth, is greater than "new" but less than half. A "waxing" crescent Moon is that period when the illuminated region is increasing from new to first-quarter (half); likewise, a "waning" crescent Moon is that period when the illuminated region is decreasing from half (third-quarter) to new.
In the northern hemisphere, a waxing crescent moon is illuminated on the right, while a waning crescent mooon is illuminated on the left. (right = rising / left = leaving)
In the southern hemisphere, the effect is just the opposite. A waxing crescent moon is seen on the left, and a waning crescent moon is seen on the right.
For locations on the equator, both the waxing and waning crescent moon appear illuminated along the bottom - or as a smile.
